Tottenham Doesn’t Break Managers. The Culture Does.
“History tells us, quite clearly, that being the former Spurs manager can be preferable to actually being the Spurs manager.”
At what point will Spurs fans, the media, and the decision-makers finally admit the problem isn’t the managers?
Over the last couple of decades, Tottenham has had a procession of top-quality managers. Most arrived with strong reputations and left with them intact....many even went on to achieve greater success after leaving the club.
Somehow, they become “bad managers” only during their time at Spurs.
Funny, that.
Just last year, their own fans cheered for the team to lose, simply to stop their rivals from winning the league.
What sort of culture is that?
Antonio Conte saw it for what it was and famously called it out in a brutal (and accurate) rant. Now, he’s on the brink of winning Serie A with Napoli.
Nuno Espírito Santo, who was discarded after just four months in 2021, has Nottingham Forest within touching distance of European qualification heading into the final weekend.
So, ahead of tomorrow’s Europa League Final, I’ll be hoping for a win for Ange.
Whether you rate his football coaching prowess or not, you could do much worse than listening to how he carries himself as a man.
He’s a master at standing up for himself and backing himself in all situations. He knows his worth, sets clear boundaries, and doesn’t tolerate people crossing them.
And whether it’s in the dressing room or a press conference, he consistently drops powerful life lessons.....on leadership, resilience, and self-respect.
But if he does get beaten, sacked, and taken on by a club with bigger ambitions, and fans who genuinely value him, I’m not sure that’s a loss.
